i’ve recently started working on a macbook pro after moving from a regular sweet white macbook, the thing i most loved about the macbook is that i can close the lid and the computer will immediately go into sleep, opening the lid will show the login box in under 5 seconds. i loved this thing. i didnt restart or shut off the macbook for weeks and weeks.
After moving to the macbook pro i started noticing some strange behaviors. the macbook pro just didnt want to sleep. i shut the lid. it sleeps. i move it or put it in my bag and it comes back again. sometimes it gives me the login, after logging in it returns to semi sleep mode, i got a mouse pointing but blank screen. Very weird that caused me to hard reset the computer for a few times. It even decided to boot back up in my bag turning into a lava lamp hotness in a few minutes, i realized that only after a few hours when i heard the fans going insane in my bag. Again a case of hard reset because it was unresponsive.

After googling it abit, i didnt find any substantial evidence in the first results, digging abit further came up with this topic http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5142802 I finally found fellow macbook pro users that are experiencing the same exact problem. Turns out apple decided to introduce a new hibernate mode for the macbook pro computers called SafeSleep that does alot of stuff to prevent a tragic lose of data. problem is the computer goes into so much calculations if you got some programs running that it sleeps after 5 minutes almost and wakes up on every nudge because of the motion and light sensors. probably its a good thing. but for the everyday user its a pain in the ass that can hurt the computer hardware eventually like the over heating in my bag accident.

The forum users and the article in there suggested a quick solution that solved my problem. OSX has a few hibernate modes ranging from 0 to 7, where 3 is the safesleep mode which you macbook pro user is probably using. using these steps you can see what your mode is and how to change it taken from the forum article:

*** Please note this is essentially playing with stuff you are not meant todo. do it at your own risk. if your computer blows up or runs over your dog dont blame me ***
1. check your current mode: open terminal and write pmset -g | grep hibernatemode, it should prompt hibernatemode 3, 3 indicates your current mode. there are several modes. i used 0 as the one used on my macbook that never caused any issue and i assume is safe.

2. Write down your current mode so you can revert back to your old settings.

3. Change your hibernation mode, open terminal and write sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0, it will prompt for password and return nothing.

Thats it!, after that you can test try it by just closing the lid and see how fast the computer goes to sleep and wakes up. Enjoy.

I found this site via google for the same problem. I have had my mb pro since july ‘07 and this ‘not waking up’ hasn’t been a problem until I upgraded to 10.5.2, did keyboard firmware upgrade. I tried this change and it appeared to have fixed it for a day but later this evening, I closed my lid for 10 min and when I opened it, no glory! Had to force power off to get it back. So there is more to it than the hibernate setting.
