Recently i started experimenting with Amazon’s simple storage service S3. The idea is that the service cost is free and you only pay for usage, if you got a huge bandwidth crunching site you can use amazon’s s3 server farm to host videos,pictures and even your .pid mysql database. they charge you by the usage of the bandwidth on your account, i’ve started using it just recently and did some experiments with the s3 service, im a mac user so i downloaded the s3 browser app for osx

Everybody recommand the firefox s3 plugin but i had a really hard time using it because it kept hanging and forcing me to restart firefox all together. But i found some fun fact about using the firefox plugin. i dunno if its a mistake or not but i could change directorys to other people’s buckets if they didnt protect them and see pictures and files of some abi and so on. is that a bug or just a security issue?

Any how, Continuing working with the s3 will probably end today, i dont see much use of it right now and the latency is terrible, the serve of files is slowing then my mediatemple (dv) rage server, i got almost unlimited bandwidth on that package, why should i use the amazon s3 service? it might be a good asset server for large video websites that need alot of storage. my mysql isnt that big as it is and i can even rent some more space dedicated for the mysql so it wont hog the server.

I found no use of the amazon, it might be good for huge customers, but if i got 1gig of transfer and i pay 400bucks for it compared to 100$ for almost unlimited at mediatemple i find this service pretty simple and featureless, no security, no nothing.

Thats it, thats my feel about the S3 service, its nice but i feel uncomf’ putting my files on ‘low end’ computers and the fact that the ‘buckets’ are flat in structure is terrible. i find it a huge security risk or atleast it feels like it.Â it might be really kewl to have your server serve your data from amazon’s server but it also may be stupid to start spreading your data all over the place, wheres the backup, wheres the ssh to that files. i dunno. i got some personal issues with this service.
