When i tried to log into gmail using my safari fresh install on my macbook intel that i just bought, the whole page hanged on the LOADING screen after login, i tried every possible thing that google suggested as clearing the cache, resetting safari, clearing cookies and restarting osx. nothing was working until i came across an article on apple.com that fixed the issue.

go to finder, click your username home directory and head over to /library/preferences/ drag from the list of files the file com.apple.safari.plist to the trash and empty the trash. then try running safari again and logging into gmail. worked for me.
